Mahua Roychowdhury was from a middle class family and her birth name was Sonali. Sonali used to perform in local functions as a dancer. Mahua was a trained dancer. Eminent film maker Tarun Majumder discovered Sonali and gave her chance in film Sriman Prithviraj in 1973. Sonali's name was changed to Mahua by Tarun Babu.
Mahua's filmy career was of 12 years but within the short period of time she managed to make a slot for herself in Bengali film industry. Mahua has also worked in a Hindi film opposite Amal Palekar.
