Bengali film Muktodhara is a film of Nandita Roy and Shiboprosad Mukherjee where Rituparna Sengupta and real life convict Nigel Akkara are in the leading roles. Nigel Akkara was in Presidency Jail for nine years. State Minister Bratya Basu is also in the film Muktodhara and he is portraying the role of Rituparna Sengupta’s husband.
The directors of the film Muktodhara are inspired from Tagore’s dance drama ‘Balmiki Pratibha’ which was staged by Nigel Akkara and other convicts of Presidency Jail. Social activist and dancer Alokananda Ray was in charge of the project. In real life, Alokananda Ray’s consistent hard work succeeded to bring Nigel Akkara from a criminal life to mainstream of the society. Story of Muktodhara is based on a real story of a convict.
Rituparna Sengupta is playing the role of Alokananda Ray in the film and Nigel Akkara is in the role of a criminal, Yusuf Mohammed.
